We have developed eCommerce solutions using our own bespoke cms. However for larger scale solutions sometimes it's better to use an 'off the shelf' solution and then customise it to your needs. We've used Zen Cart, OS Commerce, Open Cart and various other systems in the past. We've customised, skinned and intergrated these systems with payment gateways with great success.
